Description

Caution: When using any camera to image the Sun, always use appropriate solar filters with your telescope.

With up to 60 fps, this astro CCD camera is ideally suited to colour astrophotography, in which very fast sequences of images are captured. Using the shipped software - IC Capture.AS - you can capture lossless and uncompressed images sequences as AVI files.

Fast display of colour images

IC Capture.AS performs colour interpolation on the raw colour data (RAW format) from the CCD chip. This reduces the load on the camera processor. Should, on the other hand, the camera be installed on a host PC in which the CPU is not particularly fast, colour interpolation can be performed by the camera itself. In this case, the maximum refresh rate is 30 fps. Alternatively, should colour interpolation not be desirable at all, AVI files can be written in RAW format.

Sony® colour CCD

The DBK 21AF04.AS uses a modern colour CCD chip (ICX098BQ, progressive scan, manufactured by Sony®). It outputs a resolution of 640 x 480 pixel at a 1/4" format. Even at long exposure times, its noise is minimal. The high quality of the CCD chip also permits its deployment in scientific image processing applications.

No IR cut filter

Although the astro CCD camera DBK 21AU04.AS has a colour CCD, it does not have an IR cut filter. It is therefore possible that users of this astro CCD camera can fit their own filters, thus being able to set it up to their own requirements.

Fast data transfer via USB 2.0

The DBK 21AF04.AS camera generates a fast stream of uncompressed colour images. In order to transfer these to the host PC, a fast bus is required. Hence, the camera is fitted with a USB 2.0 port.

Live 60fps colour image display.
Capture of an AVI file.

Software

IC Capture.AS - Camera control software IC Capture.AS is authored by The Imaging Source and has been specifically designed for use with astronomy cameras. The software is bundled with the camera Using IC Capture.AS, you can do the following:

  • Set all camera parameters.
  • See the live image data stream from the camera.
  • Retrieve singular images from the camera and save them as BMP or JPG files.
  • Capture image sequences and save the single images as enumerated BMP or JPG files.
  • Capture image sequences and save them as lossless, uncompressed AVI files. These files can be post-processed in other astronomy applications, such as RegiStax.

Please note that in order to save image sequences, a host computer with a fast CPU and fast secondary hard disk is required.

Video format selection.
Live image stream with histogram display.

AVI file generation

With IC Capture.AS you can save the images outputted from the camera as an AVI file. There are two approaches to achieve this:

  • If you would like to save a compressed AVI file, simply select the appropriate codec in IC Capture.AS (DivX, for example).
  • If you prefer uncompressed AVIs, simply select the shipped codec (uncompressed Y800, uncompressed RGB24, uncompressed RGB32, uncompressed UYVY).

Carries full one year UK warranty.
